The RMI Maritime Registry program was setup by the Marshall Islands Government in 1988 and has now become the second largest registry in the world in terms of gross tonnage. The registry is run very professional, with its headoffice in Washington, DC and a network of 28 worldwide offices with more than 400 employees. The RMI maritime registry plays a significant role in at the International Maritime Organization (IMO with a permanent representative.
The Marshall Islands Registry is the only major open registry to be included on the White Lists of both the Paris and Tokyo MoUs and to hold Qualship 21 status with the US Coast Guard for four consecutive years.

Why is the Marshall Islands boat registration so popular?

The RMI registry is very popular with private yacht owners as they do not need an expensive survey to register their vessel (if it is classed, under 24 meters and less then 20 years old). Also, any vessel registered under Marshall Islands flag can easily obtain a US cruising permit which allows a vessel to go in and out of US ports without having to sign in with port authorities. The registration of private yachts is limited to those of 12 meter (m) or more in length overall (LOA).

What is considered a private yacht in the Marshall Islands?

Private yachts are defined as yachts not carrying passengers for hire, not engaged in trade or commerce, and used solely for the pleasure or recreational purposes of its owner. Private yachts of 12 m and more but less than 24 m in LOA and/or hull length (LH), and under 20 years of age, benefit with reduced registration procedures, processing times, and a competitive flat fee for registration. The same will apply to tenders from 7 m and more but less than 24 m in Length of an RMI registered yacht.

Who can own a Marshall Islands flagged yacht?

Ownership of an RMI registered yacht can be either through a Marshall Islands company or thru a foreign company that will be registered in the the Marshall Islands. This means that you have the choice of setting up a new Marshall Islands company to own your vessel or you can use an existing company to continue ownership. We can setup a UK LTD or a Delaware LLC to own your vessel for a flat fee of $300,- USD.

How much does it cost to register a boat in the Marshall Islands?

There is a total of $1650,- USD in fees to register under RMI flag (see details below) if you already have an existing company that owns your vessel. If you need a new company to be setup in order to own your vessel, we can do this for a fee of $300. Either way, we handle the complete registration of your vessel in the Marshall Islands for a flat service fee of $350,- USD. This fee will save you a lot of time and errors and includes everything including overnight courier fees.

What paperwork is needed to register a private yacht under RMI flag?

Original Application for Registration, duly acknowledged or notarized (MI-101U)a copy is acceptable for registration with original to follow. Copy must be kept onboard.
Original or Certified True Copy of Power of Attorney or Corporate Resolutions: Authority of Agent/Officer.
Copy of Third Liability Insurance.
Copy of Bill of Sale.
Copy of National Tonnage Certificate (NTC) or other evidence of Gross and Net Tonnage, i.e. Builders Certificate, Certificate of Registry from Previous Registry, Confirmation from a Naval Architect.
Copy of Protocol of Delivery and Acceptance, (if available).
Copy of Non-Registration Letter or deletion certificate from previous registry, (if applicable).

Can I get an MMSI radio license for my Marshall Islands flagged boat?

Yes, we can apply for a MMSI radio license for your vessel even without taking any radio course. The temporary urgent radio MMSI license is US $100 and the permanent 4 year license is $200,-.

The MMSI license can be renewed after 4 years for a fee of $125,- USD.
